Bunions

What are bunions?

A bunion is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe, where the toe joins the foot. It occurs when the bones in the front part of the foot shift out of alignment, causing the big toe to lean toward the second toe. This misalignment leads to the characteristic protruding bump on the side of the foot. Smaller bunions (bunionettes) can develop on the joint of your little toe.

Deciding between conservative bunion treatment and surgery is important, as not all bunions are the same and different procedures address different needs. The right approach depends on your clinical exam, X-rays, activity level, health history, and personal goals. Because bunions often become more painful as we age, they’re a frequent issue addressed in senior foot care, where maintaining comfort and mobility is especially important. If you’re experiencing bunion pain or notice changes in your foot shape, request an appointment at Bigfoot Podiatry or give us a call to schedule a visit.
